Our bodies have lots of parts. We see with our eyes and we hear with our ears. We smell with our nose and taste with our tongue. Our legs and feet help us walk, and our hands help us hold things. We have two arms, two legs and one head.

Most words become plural (more than one) by adding -s. Words that end in s, ss, sh, ch or x add -es instead. Example: cat becomes cats, but box becomes boxes because it ends in x.

We have five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. We touch and feel things with our skin, so we can tell if something is hot, cold, soft or rough. We taste with our tongue. Sweet, salty and sour are kinds of taste. A lemon tastes sour. Our senses help us find out about the world and keep us safe.

A noun is a naming word. It names a person, an animal, a place or a thing. In the sentence 'The girl fed the cat', girl and cat are both nouns. Look for the word that names someone or something.

Animals are living things. A dog, a cat and a rabbit can be pets. A cow, a sheep and a pig live on a farm. A sheep gives us wool. A fish lives in water and swims using its fins. A bird has wings and is covered in feathers.

Rain fell all day. A small dog ran into the garden. It jumped in a deep puddle with a splash! Mud stuck to its wet paws. The dog shook itself dry by the back door. Then it slept on a soft red mat in the warm sun.

Plants are living things. A plant has roots, a stem, leaves and often flowers. The roots grow under the soil and take in water. The stem holds the plant up. Plants need water and light to grow. A tree is a big plant, and its hard, woody stem is called a trunk.

A sentence needs an end mark. Use a full stop for a sentence that tells you something. Use a question mark for a sentence that asks something. Use an exclamation mark for a sentence that shows strong feeling, like 'What fun!'

Everything is made of a material. Wood comes from trees. Glass is hard and you can see through it, so we use it for windows. Metal is strong and shiny. Plastic can be made into lots of different shapes. Wool is soft and warm.

Opposite words have completely different meanings. Big and small are opposites, and so are hot and cold. Knowing opposites helps you describe things more clearly.

There are four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. It is autumn now. In autumn, leaves turn red, orange and brown, and fall off many trees. The days get shorter and the weather gets colder. After autumn comes winter.

Leaves turn gold and red and brown, softly falling, drifting down. The wind blows them all around, then they rest upon the ground. Squirrels dash to find a nut, hiding it inside a hut. Soon the trees will all be bare, cold air whistles everywhere.
